Physical versus spiritual cleanness

Jesus always emphasize the importance of the spiritual than the carnal. He kept on criticizing the teachers of the law in His time who focus on practicing physical ritual rather than caring for others.

"And calling again the multitude unto him, he said to them: Hear ye me all, and understand. There is nothing from without a man that entering into him, can defile him. But the things which come from a man, those are they that defile a man." (Mk 7:14-15)

While the need for spiritual spotlessness must be on top, it is likewise necessary that the physical, where the spirit temporarily resides, must be clean from earthly blemishes and sinfulness.

"For cleanness of body was ever esteemed to proceed from a due reverence to God, to society, and to ourselves." Francis Bacon
